Book submission: Essays by William Hazlitt

Title: Essays by William Hazlitt
Author: William Hazlitt
Publication date: New York, 1926
Library: NC State University Library
Call number: PR4772. E7 2G7 cop. 2
Submitted by: Allison DeVille
Description:
The name Edna A. Reichstein is written in pencil.

There are also lots of pencil underlines in other parts of the book , most of them seeming to gain factual information. However, the underliner (Edna?) is occasionally wrong in her marginal notes about what she has underlined. For example, she has underlined a description of Coleridge and marked it as “description of Hazlitt” (pg. 5).

Other marginalia seems more personal. In his section “On the Fear of Death”, the commenter (Edna?) has added her own interpretation that “wished to do over and succeed in his failure.” (307). She also underlines “life is like the exploring of a dark passage.”

Book submission: The Life of Samuel Johnson (Eclectic English Classics)

Title: The Life of Samuel Johnson (Eclectic English Classics)
Author: Lord Macaulay
Publication date: New York, 1895
Library: D.H. Hill Library, NC State University, Raleigh, NC
Call number: PR3533 M3 1895
Submitted by: Kenneth T. Pinion
Description:
Prefaced with an introduction by the author, this book details the life of Samuel Johnson as well as his literary career. The book itself is thin in shape and only about 68 pages. It’s in okay condition, with only some stains, discoloring on the cover and pages, and tears on the corners of the book. The original owner (Garland Keeling) wrote his name on the first page of the book two times. There are underlined passages and mostly all of the marginalia is about the typical “characterization” of Samuel Johnson based on his legacy as an author. The words “char. of SJ” and “characteristic of…” appear on the margins on certain pages.
